The Pacific Area

Nicaragua is comprised of 3 important geographical areas. In the Pacific area, located in the west you can find the mountain range that is mostly formed by volcanoes.
Most of these volcanoes are active right now and have a conic form.

Some of these are located inside Nicaragua Lake and Managua Lake, creating volcanic islands.
Among the most famous volcanoes known are Cerro Negro, used for extreme sports. And the Masaya Volcano, located just outside of the capital city and its crater is easily accessible.
To the west of the mountain range, there are the plains that meet with the pacific ocean. You can locate beautiful beaches like Jiquilillo or Montelimar.

The most populated cities of Nicaragua are located in this area, Managua, Leon, and Tipitapa. These cities keep many of the colonial-era buildings and some roads. Even some new infrastructure has been built with a colonial style.

The Central Area

In the center of the country, you can find the plains to the south and the mountain range to the north. In these mountains are formed the rivers that flow into the Caribbean area. The plains are used for farms and cattle breeding.

In the northern area, there are important valleys that are used for farming too. Important cities are located here, with industry, tourism, and agriculture as the main sources of income. We can speak about Esteli, Matagalpa and Jinotega.

National parks thrive here as the mountain area is a refuge for many species of animals and plants. Also, waterfalls are not scarce and there are some small lakes, like Apanas Lake or El Dorado Lake.

The Caribbean Area

The Caribbean is the less developed area in Nicaragua. Dense jungles, mangroves, and other types of wetlands are all over the area.
Few cities are located here because the only source of income is tourism and fishing. Many protected areas are quite unexplored yet and it is attractive to researchers and scientists hoping to find new species of animals or plants.

The most important city in this area is Bluefields, the typical Caribbean town with small streets and friendly people. People here speak Creole, a dialect of English. If you are a fan of Caribbean culture, Bluefields is a must. Bluewater beaches are everywhere, perfect for those that enjoy bathing.

Fans of fishing and snorkeling have their place on Corn Island, an exotic Caribbean island accessible from town by boat or by plane.

Weather

Nicaragua is hot. Since Nicaragua is mainly plain and there are not very high mountain ranges, you’ll find very few places where the temperature is cold. In the northern regions, you can find temperate weather, mostly in the winter season.

Do not worry, plenty of rivers, lakes, and beaches to take a bath awaits you in this Central American country. You can cold down a bit and take a delicious natural bath.
Nicaragua has only two seasons: summer, when rains are scarce, and the rainy season when rainfall is abundant.

This rainy season is weaker in the Pacific area, you can have sunny days during it. The rainy(green) season can be good to visit the country since you can have access to many cuts in hotel costs.

Is Nicaragua Safe?

Nicaragua is a relatively safe country. The risk of terrorism or riots is low.
Earthquakes are part of the history of the country but it is not like they happen every year. We can count that Nicaragua had important earthquakes or violent volcanic every 20-30 years.

Volcanoes are part of the charm of the country and it is a unique experience to visit them. Just have in mind that this kind of tourism has a degree of risk.
When it comes to human behavior we highly recommend being cautious. Mostly in the cities, thefts, pickpockets, and scammers can be a threat. Do not be overconfident, always ask for a price beforehand and ask locals about prices and places to avoid.

When it comes to transport, the best advice is: Do not be cheap!! Do not put yourself in danger by using cheap boat transport or a vehicle you can clearly see it had better days. Be sure the boat has lifejackets or the taxi has seatbelts. Try to use phone apps to call your transport to different places.

Go Home early, Nicaragua has plenty to offer during daylight. Try to be at your hotel at 8 – 9 o’clock at most.
If you can visit Nicaragua with a guide, it is a much better option because the guide knows the right people to trust and the right places to visit. Remember we offer you a Motorcycle tour to Nicaragua!
