Water, fire, and land combine uniquely in Nicaragua: volcanoes, lakes, rivers, beaches and colonial-style cities full of friendly people. After years of war, the country is ready to welcome curious travelers with open arms.

Key points

  • Three main areas: the volcanic Pacific, the central plains and mountains, and the wild Caribbean.
  • Most volcanoes are active; the Masaya Volcano, just outside the capital, has an easily accessible crater.
  • Bluefields and Corn Island for Caribbean culture, fishing and snorkeling.
  • It is hot; the rainy season, weaker on the Pacific side, brings good discounts on hotels.
  • A relatively safe country: be cautious in cities, don't be cheap on transport, go home early and, if you can, travel with a guide.

Water, fire, and land combine uniquely in Nicaragua. Volcanoes, lakes, rivers, and beaches are part of the Nicaraguan landscape. All this is combined with colonial-style cities full of friendly people and delicious food. After years of war in the 20th century, the country is healing, and it is ready to welcome curious travelers with open arms. Get ready to visit the greatest lake, the most active volcanoes, and the most exuberant jungles in Central America.

The Pacific area

Nicaragua is made up of three important geographical areas. In the Pacific area, in the west, you can find the mountain range, formed mostly by volcanoes. Most of these volcanoes are active right now and have a conical shape.

Some of them are located inside Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua, creating volcanic islands. Among the most famous volcanoes are Cerro Negro, used for extreme sports, and the Masaya Volcano, located just outside the capital city, whose crater is easily accessible. West of the mountain range, the plains meet the Pacific Ocean. There you can find beautiful beaches like Jiquilillo or Montelimar.

The most populated cities of Nicaragua are located in this area: Managua, León, and Tipitapa. These cities keep many colonial-era buildings and some roads. Some new infrastructure has even been built in a colonial style.

The central area

In the center of the country, you can find plains to the south and mountains to the north. The rivers that flow into the Caribbean area are born in these mountains. The plains are used for farms and cattle breeding.

In the northern area, there are important valleys that are used for farming too. Important cities are located here, with industry, tourism, and agriculture as their main sources of income: Estelí, Matagalpa, and Jinotega, for example.

National parks thrive here, as the mountain area is a refuge for many species of animals and plants. Waterfalls are not scarce either, and there are some small lakes, like Lake Apanás or El Dorado Lake.

The Caribbean area

The Caribbean is the least developed area of Nicaragua. Dense jungles, mangroves, and other types of wetlands are all over the area. Few cities are located here, because the only sources of income are tourism and fishing. Many protected areas are still quite unexplored, which attracts researchers and scientists hoping to find new species of animals or plants.

The most important city in this area is Bluefields, the typical Caribbean town with small streets and friendly people. People here speak Creole, a dialect of English. If you are a fan of Caribbean culture, Bluefields is a must. Blue-water beaches are everywhere, perfect for those who enjoy swimming.

Fans of fishing and snorkeling have their place on Corn Island, an exotic Caribbean island accessible from town by boat or by plane.

Weather

Nicaragua is hot. Since the country is mainly flat and its mountain ranges are not very high, you'll find very few places where it is cold. In the northern regions, you can find temperate weather, mostly in the winter season.

Do not worry: plenty of rivers, lakes, and beaches await you in this Central American country, where you can cool down a bit with a delicious natural bath. Nicaragua has only two seasons: summer, when rain is scarce, and the rainy season, when rainfall is abundant.

This rainy season is weaker in the Pacific area, and you can have sunny days during it. The rainy (green) season can be a good time to visit the country, since you can get many discounts on hotel costs.

Is Nicaragua safe?

Nicaragua is a relatively safe country. The risk of terrorism or riots is low. Earthquakes are part of the history of the country, but it is not like they happen every year: we can count that Nicaragua has had major earthquakes or violent volcanic eruptions every 20 to 30 years.

Volcanoes are part of the charm of the country, and visiting them is a unique experience. Just keep in mind that this kind of tourism carries a degree of risk. When it comes to human behavior, we highly recommend being cautious. Mostly in the cities, thefts, pickpockets, and scammers can be a threat. Do not be overconfident: always ask for the price beforehand, and ask locals about prices and places to avoid.

When it comes to transport, the best advice is: do not be cheap! Do not put yourself in danger by using cheap boat transport or a vehicle that has clearly seen better days. Make sure the boat has life jackets or the taxi has seat belts. Try to use phone apps to call your transport to different places.

Go home early: Nicaragua has plenty to offer during daylight. Try to be at your hotel by 8 or 9 p.m. at the latest. If you can visit Nicaragua with a guide, it is a much better option, because the guide knows the right people to trust and the right places to visit.
